Exposure to noise amongst Service Personnel in the British Armed Forces is commonplace.
Military noise exposure is varied and can involve both cumulative and long-term exposures to noise-for example in engine rooms or operating vehicles or being in a military band-or exposures to far more intense noise-such as from heavy armoured vehicles, small arms and artillery and mortar fire.
Unprotected exposure to such noise can damage hearing giving rise to range of conditions, such as Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL), tinnitus (subjective ringing or buzzing in the ears), hyperacusis (sensitivity to noise), acoustic trauma (almost immediate physical damage to hearing from exposure to very intense noise), Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) (difficulty in perceiving sounds correctly) and other problems.
Hearing Damage compensation claims made by Service Personnel against the MOD have existed for over 20 years. Historically, there are possibly several three hundred thousand Veterans who were exposed to noise and may suffer Hearing Damage. It is estimated that over six per cent of current British infantry soldiers are now suffering from Hearing Damage. In serious cases, it can lead to Service Personnel being medically ruled out of frontline duties or medically discharged from Service.
